The Sustainable Communities Tax Credit: Our Position

There are numerous reasons why our legislators need to support this program.  This tax credit creates incentives to redevelop our older buildings and preserve them for generations to come.  Along the way to doing this it also contributes to the sustainability of Maryland's economy, society and our environment.

  • This tax credit pays for itself many times over with the jobs and economic development it generates - before a dime is actually spent by the State.
  • This economic activity happens where we most want it to happen - in existing neighborhoods where the benefits can have ripple effects throughout the larger community.
  • It provides true incentives to develop in our older communities rather than on green fields - incentives that are needed to get the financing to do these projects. No tax credit - no financing and no redevelopment.
  • Preservation projects save energy, reduce carbon pollution, protect our open spaces from development and protects an existing asset.

This tax credit is one of the best ways we have to the realization of true smart growth in this state.  Smart growth that is needed now more than ever when we are in tight fiscal times and 1.5 million new Marylanders are coming to this state.

1000 Friends of Maryland urges a favorable report for this bill that protects Maryland historic, environmental and economic resources.
