Baltimore, October 11, 2017 – Today the Board of Directors is pleased to announce John Campagna as the next executive director of 1000 Friends of Maryland. The staff and board conducted a robust search to replace Dru Schmidt-Perkins, who departs in November after 19 years running this smart growth organization.
John’s career has included high tech, finance, and environmental restoration. As the founder of Restore Capital and an independent advisor, he has helped organizations such as Corvias, GreenVest LLC, Chesapeake Bay Foundation, Interfaith Partners for the Chesapeake, and others create solutions to help clean up the Bay, create local jobs, and enhance the local community.
He has advocated and testified on these important matters at the state and local levels within Maryland. He has also worked in his community as Chair/President of Baltimore Green Week, Co-Chair of the Episcopal Diocese of Maryland’s Environmental Committee, and a volunteer with groups such as Blue Water Baltimore. John lives in North Baltimore with his wife and daughter. His love of the outdoors includes hiking, canoeing, gardening, and being a lifelong avid equestrian.
“John takes the helm of this organization that has a strong record,” said Dale Sams Chairman of the Board. “We see the impact of 20 years of strategic and effective advocacy everywhere, including new state laws, stronger regulations, and policies that strengthen our communities and protect rural areas from costly, polluting sprawl development”.
Mr. Sams went on to say “People are often surprised at how small this organization is. But when you have a strong team, smart strategy, and effective coalition leadership you can have a powerful impact. We thank Dru for her many years at the helm of this organization and welcome John. We look forward to this next chapter in the 1000 Friends of Maryland story as we advocate for a more environmentally and economically sustainable future for all Marylanders. Be on the lookout for new victories and successes.”
