Howard County
Howard County was officially created in 1851 out of Anne Arundel County and was named after the Revolutionary War officer, Maryland governor, and statesmen, John Eager Howard. Howard County covers about 160,670 acres of land, about 22,400 of which have been permanently preserved through agricultural, historic, and environmental easements as of 2000. Due to its proximity to the Baltimore and DC metro areas, the county has experienced extreme development pressure.
The population of 247,842 in 2000 is anticipated to reach 301,350 by 2015. The majority of development is concentrated in the eastern part of the county, especially Columbia and Ellicott City.
