Harford County

Harford County was erected from Baltimore County in 1773 and name after Henry Harford, the last Proprietary of Maryland and illegitimate son of Frederick Calvert, the sixth Lord Baltimore. Harford County is located on the fall line with the rolling Piedmont region to the north and west and Coastal Plain along the Bay on the east.

The population has grown rapidly in recent decades, particularly along I-95 and Rt. 24 in the county’s “Development Envelope,” an area designated for concentrated development. Sixty-two percent of the county’s 281,600 acres are zoned agricultural.

As of 2000, the county owned 3,903 acres of parkland and preserved over 25,000 acres through various types of easements. The county is expected to see continued growth as the population of 218,590 of 2000 reaches 265,700 by 2015.
