Dorchester County
Dorchester County is the largest county on the Eastern shore. Shaped like a heart, it is known as the “Heart of the Chesapeake Country.” Its 17,000 miles of shoreline make it a prime location for boaters and nature enthusiasts to explore its many waterways and marshes.
As of 2000, a mere 4% of the total land area was developed. The remainder consisted of forests, agricultural lands, and wetlands. About 48% of the county’s 354,870 acres are zoned for agriculture, which dominates the northeast part of the county.
The last couple of decades have witnessed a slight population decline. In 2000 the population was 30,674 and is projected to increase slightly to 34,650 by 2015. Most growth is anticipated to take place in the North Dorchester and Cambridge areas.
