Charles County
Charles County was established in 1658 and was named after Charles Calvert, the third Lord Baltimore. The county occupies 2,000 square miles and has historically been comprised of compact settlements spread throughout a rural landscape.
Fifty-six percent of the land is zoned for agriculture which dominates the southwest and eastern parts of the county. The county also has over 15,000 acres of state, federal, and municipal parkland and is looking for ways to expand hiking/ biking trails and greenway connections.
Despite these efforts, the county has experienced significant suburbanization of rural areas within the last twenty years. In 2000 the population was 120,546 and could reach 160,950 by 2015.
