Calvert County
Calvert County is a peninsula surrounded by the Chesapeake Bay and Patuxent River, and at just 220 square miles, it is the smallest county in Maryland. It was established in 1654 as “Patuxent County” until the name was changed in 1658.
Thirty-five percent of the county’s 137,730 acres are zoned agricultural. The county has over 4,500 acres of parkland and over 20,000 acres of farmland have been protected through local farmland preservation efforts. The 2000 population was 74,563 and is projected to reach 96,500 by 2015.
1000 Friends of Maryland released barometers to address the difficult question of whether counties are on track to clean local waters as local, state, and federal governments finalize their plans to comply with the Environmental Protection Agency’s Chesapeake Bay “pollution diet.” How is Calvert County doing?
